UK H1 2024 BULK ANNUITY DEALS TOTAL 20 BLN STG ($26 BLN), DOWN 5% FROM H1 2023 -L&G REPORT
LONDON, Sept 5 (Reuters) -British insurance deals for corporate pensions, known as bulk annuities, totalled 20 billion pounds ($26 billion) in the first half of 2024, down 5% from a year earlier, Legal & General LGEN.L said in a report on Thursday.
L&G and other UK insurers have been expanding their bulk annuity business in recent years, as companies look to unload defined benefit, or final salary, pension schemes from their balance sheets.
In a bulk annuity transaction, the insurer takes on payments to pensioners.
Some pension scheme trustees, however, are choosing not to buy a bulk annuity now that higher interest rates have put schemes into surplus after years of deficit, consultants say.
L&G predicts full-year UK bulk annuity volume of above 40 billion pounds, versus last year's record 49 billion pounds.
The U.S. bulk annuity market saw a record first half, with $26 billion in deals, up 15% from a year earlier, L&G said.
