Fertilizer maker Mosaic cuts production outlook after equipment failures, hurricane
Sept 16 (Reuters) -Mosaic MOS.N forecast lower third-quarter production on Monday as the fertilizer producer was hit by equipment failures in Canada and Hurricane Francine in the U.S. Gulf Coast.
The company's potash production at its Canadian mines, including the Esterhazy mine, one of the world's largest potash-producing operations, and the Colonsay mine, was affected by electrical equipment failures.
In July, Mosaic had restarted the Colonsay mine in Saskatchewan, Canada, to offset the planned maintenance at its Esterhazy project in the same province.
Shares of the company were down 4.5% at $25.22.
Mosaic said it expects operational issues to reduce third-quarter potash production and shipment volumes by 200,000 to 300,000 tonnes. In August, the company had said it expected sales volumes of 2.1 to 2.3 million tonnes for potash.
The Tampa, Florida-based company also said that weather events, including Hurricane Francine, which hit Louisiana last week, had impactedits phosphate operations with an estimated reductionof 80,000 to 110,000 tonnes.
Mosaic, which had been grappling with lukewarm demand for fertilizers, had projected third-quarter sales between 1.7 to 1.9 million tonnes for the phosphate segment earlier.
