WALL STREET SINKS AS MIDEAST TENSIONS ESCALATE

Wall Street shares ended on a downbeat note on Tuesday, with Nasdaq .IXIC dropping more than 1%, after Iran fired a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel in retaliation for the latter's campaign against Tehran's Hezbollah allies in Lebanon.

Tuesday's losses followed strong gains for September and for the third quarter.

Israel's military said it would continue "powerful strikes" through Tuesday night throughout the Middle East after Iran's strike, even as the United States warned Iran that it would face severe consequences for its actions.

While the broad market fell, energy shares rose along with oil prices. Exxon Mobil XOM.N surged more than 2%.

Defense stocks also gained, including Northrop Grumman NOC.N and Lockheed Martin LMT.N. The S&P 500 aerospace and defense index .SPLRCAERO climbed more than 1% to a record high. Utilities .SPLRCU were up 0.8%.

"The markets are acting predictably. In the lead-up to and outbreak of war or geopolitical crises, major indexes sell off reflexively, dropping an average of 5% to 7%," says Lou Basenese, president and chief market strategist, at MDB Capital.

"The selling pressure typically lasts for about two weeks. Within another two weeks, though, they typically recover. So trading around the fear or outbreak is a risky proposition at best."

CBOE's market volatility index, Wall Street's fear gauge, .VIX jumped two points to 19.26 after hitting a three-week high of 20.73 earlier in the session.
